Ombre Prayer Jars

When it comes to youth group get-togethers with my group of middle school girls, I try to find craft ideas that are both fun to make, but also useful in life (stay tuned for t-shirt infinity scarves coming in November). At the beginning of the summer we decided to make ombre prayer jars.

The idea? An adorable and unique jar that the girls can store their prayer requests in (with the idea of handing it over to God) and revisit every month or so to see how things have turned, or are turning, out.

This was a pretty easy craft, in terms of supplies. I found small mason jars at Craft Warehouse (one of my absolute most favorite stores), along with some stickers, burlap “ribbon” and ties, Mod-Podge (a staple!), glass markers and sharpies, sponges for application and glass-friendly paint. We decided on black and white, though you could do almost any color imaginable. I also bought some brown stock paper and gave it to the girls to take home and write their requests on. All in, I’d say the cost was about $45 for 6 jars, though I’m sure you could find some of the accessories cheaper.

The ombre was a little more difficult than I had imagined it would be. I discovered that it worked best if we used three sponges: one with white paint, one with black, and one mixed into a gray, and started from the bottom (black) up. We did the bottoms of the jars, and the lids as well. There really isn’t a “wrong” way to ombre, so however you feel comfortable doing it, go for it! Once we applied stickers, ribbons and writing, we covered the entire jar in a matte Mod-Podge, which gave the jars an almost rubbery feel and held all the “extras” in place, and left the jars outside for a few hours to dry.

The jars were all very different and turned out super cute, plus the girls had a blast doing it (and getting all sorts of messy). I’ve had several of the girls tell me about prayers they have put or kept inside the jars as well, so I’d definitely call the ombre jars a success!

Zucchini Bowls

Not sure about your kids and family, but finding healthy things that everyone enjoys can be rough. When given the choice for dinner, one son would choose pizza, another mac n’ cheese and the husband brownies…no joke, I’m sure I could have an entire post on the amount of chocolate he eats…so I’m constantly trying to find new ways to make healthy foods delicious and not obviously healthy (yes, you heard me right, I trick all three of them).

The other day I was lucky enough to have a co-worker bring me the biggest vegetables I’ve ever seen, all fresh and straight from her garden. I grabbed up a zucchini, Arminian cucumber, and some lemon cucumbers (not pictured).

Now…what to do with a 2 1/2′ zucchini or cucumber, you ask? Well…I came up with a super easy recipe (half borrowed from Pinterest, half Kristin creation) that both husband and kiddos loved! Shocking, I know! And so Zucchini Bowls have now found a place in our recipe box.

Disclaimer: One thing you will learn from me is that I hardly ever follow a recipe step by step or ingredient by ingredient. When someone asks for one of my recipes it tends to go a little like “a pinch of that…and sometimes a pinch of this…”. For the sanity of the recipe followers out there, I will try my best to give exacts whenever I come up with something delish! I apologize in advance for the times I don’t!

Zucchini Bowls:

  • Cut a zucchini into 2-3″ rounds, making sure that the bottoms are flat, and scoop out inside. (I used a melon ball scooper) Set each bowl on a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
  • Dice one medium white onion and one green bell pepper and sauté over medium heat until soft in 1 TBSP olive oil
  • In another pan, brown one lb ground turkey
  • Add bell pepper and onion to turkey once browned (you can do this all in pan however, we buy ground turkey in bulk and freeze so I separate so it cooks more evenly)

  • Add one can tomato sauce, one diced tomato, and about 1 tsp salt/1 tsp pepper
  • Let simmer until tomato sauce is no longer runny
  • Scoop into zucchini bowls and top with mozzarella cheese (about 1/3c per bowl…probably 1/4c per bowl would do for regular sized zucchini)
  • Bake at 375˚ for 30 minutes, or until cheese is lightly brown and zucchini is soft
  • Serve and Enjoy!

We served ours with a pretzel roll and rice pilaf.  A big plus to this recipe is that I was able to blanch and freeze the zucchini insides and remains for future zucchini bread and muffins!

And in case you’re wondering what happened with the cucumber…we sliced, lightly salted and served with feta cheese. An easy and delicious snack or side!!

A 2015 Goal…

I have always been a visual goal setter…in faith, at home, for work…I firmly believe that seeing something on paper every day helps me achieve the goals I have set for myself, and for my family.

2015 has been a crazy year at our house…a new job, taking on a leadership role with our church youth group, adjusting to life in a new house, and the addition of sports for my boys. In the thick of all the things life throws your way, I realized I never set my 2015 goals!

Goals aren’t something I just throw together in the heat of the moment…but something I take seriously…mulling over all the many things I have dreamed up in my head until I settle on the things that I feel are most important, and obtainable, for my family and I in terms of faith, finances, our home, and personal growth. 2015 goals are no different (despite being 7 months late), and one of my 2015 goals is a pull over from goals of years past…one of those goals that I never really got around to, despite “starting” it many times throughout the years. That goal is being achieved now, as I write…

A blog! Yep, a blog!

Why a blog, you ask? Good question…the simple answer is that I feel like I fit the mold of the bloggers that I, myself, enjoy and that I can bring some of my crazy life to the table for others to enjoy in return. Mom, wife, and lover of Christ- check. DIY junkie- check. Lover of food and cooking- check. Chronic home remodeler- check. Devourer of books- check. Traveller- check (when finances can afford, that is). Pinterest addict- check. And the list goes on…

Anyway, whether Living Swagger is followed by one person, or by hundreds, it is a goal…and one I am FINALLY checking off my list! I hope you enjoy, and I hope you see your goals come true for 2015 too!

Welcome to Living Swagger!
